Beautiful Young Women, But Who are They?

This is a scan of an old portrait of three young women. We are quite sure they are our ancestors but while in Norway last week, none of us could not figure out who it was.



While going through some more heritage papers yesterday, I believe I came across another photo and information that helps identify the girl on the right as Borghild Hansen, one of Anton & Klara's four daughters.



This identifying photo is Borghild's passport photo with her two young daughters, Elinor & Gunvor (shown to the left). Their passport was dated May 27, 1927. Look at Borghild's eyebrows, nose and mouth. They look the same, just slightly older.



With Karoline being the oldest it is likely that the two other girls in the top photo are Borghild's two other younger sisters, Ingeborg Kristine, and Jenny.


As I do not possess any photos of either of these two girls, I cannot confirm this or distinguish who is who. If anyone has any early photos of these two girls, please contact me.


Carin Stefanelli


The photo of the three girls was found among a box of old photos that belonged to John and Louise Hansen. It included photos from Norway that belonged to John's parents Einar and Ellen. It isn't in great condition as you can see and is currently in the possession of Carin Stefanelli.

The passport photo of Borghild is from the actual (and well preserved) passport used in their crossing to the US. It was passed on to Barbara among some other personal affects when Elinor passed. It also is now in the possession of Carin Stefanelli for the purpose of documenting our heritage.

I have not yet located any data about Ragna or Kapera, the 2 known sisters of Klara according to Ellen & Elisabeth. There is a big hole in data as the 1875 census for Vestby is not available at this time. I did discover 3 other siblings of Klara's, one who did marry and have children (Jens). My only other thought is perhaps Ragna & Kaspera were not sisters but another relation, such as nieces based on their daughters approximate ages. Any more information would be greatly appreciated.

1868 - Jens Fredriksen, a brother of Klara (entry #121)
1876 - Anna Marie Fredriksdatter, a sister of Klara (1st entry)

Photo of Klara and daughter, Karoline

Here is a photo of Klara and her daughter, Karoline, her first child. While I do not know the exact date of the photo, Karoline was born in August of 1885 and she looks to be at most 5 years old. This makes this image over 115 years old!

According to Karoline's birth record, she was born at the family farm, Ulriksborg, built by her grandfather, Ulrik Hansen. This was Anton's father.

This image is from a digital photo I took of a framed copy hanging on Eva Lie's wall while visiting in Norway last week. Karoline was her grandmother, and Karoline's daughter, Margaret, was Eva's mother.

Here are links to PDF files of census data for our different ancestor's households in Norway. They are generated from the NHDC (Norwegian Historical Data Center). You can also search digitalarkivet, another Norwegian site where you can even search through digitized images of church ledgers where births and baptisms were recorded. Both these sites provide access free of charge.

Klara's Childhood Home in Son, Norway

The house shown below in both photos is the one in which Klara and her sisters grew up. Kaspera was a younger sister of hers. To date we believe she had three sisters. We didn't see these photos until after our visit to Son, so we do not have photos of the house as it stands today.

The photos were taken in front of the family house which we understand had become Kaspera's. Son is a waterfront town, an old fishing village/port. It was spelled Soon during the time of this photo. Son is currently a town in the municipality of Vestby in Akershus county. It is south of Oslo and Drobak and north of Moss. The waterway is the Oslofjord and was at one time an important port in the 18th century.

Synnove and Margaret Wilhelmsen were Klara's granddaughters. Both were the daughters of Karoline Hansen . Karoline was Anton & Klara's first born and sister to my great-grandfather Einar.

The images shown are digital photographs I took of two small old photos during our recent trip to Norway. The original photos are currently in the possession of Ellen (Vang) Odland in Norway (one of Synnove's daughters).

Ellen is also the one who informed me of the names of two of Klara's sisters (Kaspera & Ragna). Census data does not show them but they may have been born between the 1865 & 1900 censuses. We knew of Astrid & Kirsten's existence through the late Elinor Hermanson's stories but didn't know the connection to Klara.
